The world's second-largest continent and with a population amounting to nearly 15% of the world's total, Africa is a diverse place, with a desert north, equatorial band of jungle and vast grassy plains. It is known as the cradle of human life.

The largest of the continents, spanning from Russia in the north to India and Indonesia at the south. Asia is regarded as the birthplace of modern technology, with the vast and numerous Chinese empires developing gunpowder, paper, printing and the compass long before their western counterparts.

From Russia to the east and Portugal to the west, Europe is the second-smallest of the world's continents and regarded as the origin of western culture. During the colonial years of the 16th century onwards, European influence spread across most of the world, and has remained a cornerstone of civilisation ever since.

Bordered by Africa to the west, Europe to the north and Asia to the east, the Middle East is the home of modern mathematics, as developed by the ancient Babylonians, and the place of origin for three of the world's major religions, Christianity, Islam and Judaisim.

From the polar deserts of Greenland to the arid lands of Mexico, North America is a country that only rose to worldwide prominence with the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century. It is a land of varied cultures and ancient history.

A land of lush rainforests and vast planes, South America is the home of the potato. It was the home to many ancient civilisations, all long dead since the arrival of the conquistadors in the 16th century, now it is a promised land of ruins and adventure.

Comprised of Australia and all the various islands of the South Pacific, Oceania is home to vast cultures of seafaring people that were untouched for thousands of years by western civilisation. The land, though colonised extensively since its discovery, is still new and fresh, rich in natural resources that have since vanished on other continents.
